Holly of the Year 2019

Ilex opaca 'Miss Helen'

Our members have chosen an outstanding female American holly, Ilex opaca 'Miss Helen', to be Holly of the Year for 2019. Stewart McLean selected the young tree from the wild in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, way back in 1936.  He moved it to his nursery in Parkville, Maryland where he began to propagate and distribute it.  'Miss Helen' matures into a broadly pyramidal evergreen tree valued for its consistent heavy fruiting and winter hardiness in Zones 5-9.
